Beccles was a Nodal Point, or in later terminology a Class B Defended place (i.e. a place with a strong independent garrison).
The Home Guard unit responsible for its defence was ‘G’ Company, 1st Battalion Suffolk Home Guard. Headquarters was at the Old Drill Hall (TM417900).
The map below is derived from a map of the town’s defences in 37th Independent Brigade Papers, 15th Scottish Division, 1941. As well as the defences shown, the town would have been defended with barbed wire entanglements, mine fields and spigot mortars, although these are not shown on the map in 37th Brigade papers.
